Urban areas are home to an ever-increasing population. As metropolitans become the financial and educational hub of countries, a plethora of professionals, students, and tradespeople seek to build their fortune in the big city where dreams come true. However, with a geometrically multiplying load of people, urban areas are facing a shortage of space, mainly residential. Houses are becoming smaller and smaller. Multi-level apartment buildings are mushrooming throughout the urban landscape. Constructing small living spaces while ensuring they do not lose their functionality is a complicated task. Moreover, designing a small apartment to make it the home sweet home of one’s life becomes a challenging venture as well. Small house interior designing can be difficult but it is extremely rewarding to watch the small apartment transform into a cozy living space with more warmth than any palatial house.
Before choosing any random shade to paint the walls, one ought to understand the physics behind colors in order to make the right choice. Dark colors absorb most of the light that falls on them. Walls painted in dark shades would absorb light as well, making the apartment appear dull and smaller. Contrastingly, bright colors reflect most of the light that falls on them. Therefore, brightly colored walls also reflect a lot of light which makes the space look bigger. Not only does a brightly colored apartment look more spacious, but abundant light also gives it a positive and cheerful ambiance that is mandatory for one’s home to look aesthetically pleasing. One should always choose colors on the lighter spectrum like whites, neutrals, pastels, or muted colors to design a small apartment. Lighter color palettes will infuse color as well as keep the walls bright enough to give a semblance of spaciousness. The space feels more open and welcoming, unlike a darkly colored room which might feel dull and constricting.
When moving into a small living space, storage is one of the biggest issues. Making a small apartment accommodating for all members of the family is challenging enough without the added stress of accommodating the possessions as well. To overcome this challenge, one can resort to storage areas built into the furniture. Not only is their storage space ample, but also well-hidden and discreet. Beds with built-in storage boxes are the most useful furniture for small homes. Nobody will know at the onset what materials exist in the box under the bed. Ottomans, storage baskets, and storage boxes provide optimum storage space without interfering with the decor of a small apartment.
When it comes to small apartments, choosing the appropriate furniture is extremely important. Requirements like beds, sofas, chairs, and desks are inevitable for any home. However, for a smaller home, attention needs to be paid to the size and style of the furniture being bought. The furniture should not be so bulky that it overtakes the room and makes it clumsy. Nor should it be so minimal that it does not give the home a character of its own. When choosing a sofa, one should look for a sofa with a low height and profile. It will complement the dimensions of the house and will also give it character. Armrests can be optional when choosing a sofa for a small apartment. Multifunctional seating arrangements that transform into a bed for the night are an amazing solution for space issues. They do not compromise on looks or character and also improve the functionality of the space. One should choose furniture that is in proportion to the scale of the room.
Drapery can transform the visual appeal of any space. It is particularly useful in enhancing the appeal of small apartments. When employed correctly, drapery decor can create an illusion of spaciousness. Usually, people tailor the drapery to the dimensions of their windows or doors. However, keeping the drapery larger than the required dimensions is the secret to achieving a spacious and grand look even in small spaces. Instead of fitting the drapery exactly to the windows, one should extend their dimensions on all sides. This gives an illusion of bigger windows. Similarly, if one has low ceilings in their small apartment, they can extend the curtains all the way from the ceiling to the floor. This design would impart sophistication, elegance, and spaciousness to the apartment.
Lighting is a crucial aspect of interior design. Regardless of how beautifully a space has been designed, its beauty would not be visible in all its glory without proper lighting. It has been well established that light-colored walls are the Holy Grail for small apartments as they can reflect most of the light that falls on them. However, it is to be ensured that there is plenty of light in the room for the walls to reflect, otherwise brightly colored walls would not help the cause much. Both natural and artificial lighting should be taken into account. Windows should be installed wherever possible. Not only would this flood daylight into the room but also provide adequate ventilation. Artificial lighting should be strategically placed so that the place glows even at night. Multiple layers of light sources should be installed. It would elevate the overall aesthetic of the place while making the small apartment appear more spacious than it actually is.
In a small apartment, the floor space is already limited which makes interior decor challenging. Therefore, it is advised that walls be used to artistically design and decorate the living space. Not only does this decorate the house without using floor space, but it also builds the character of the house. Minimalist, uncomplicated art designs would be ideal for wall decor and could be designed in two ways. One can install a statement piece to pull the room together or align multiple small art pieces on the same wall. Art introduces personality and character into the living space and also brings visual appeal. However, complicated and intricate pieces may crowd the area. Therefore, minimalist decor should be prioritized. Macrame designs and tapestry are other wall decor options for small apartments. Maintaining a framed gallery wall will also make the room more spacious than it actually is.
The play of light can magically increase the visual appeal of any space. The reflective property of mirrors makes them one of the most versatile components in interior decoration. When light is reflected off the surface of the mirror it enlarges the room, doubling it in size. It also makes the space appear brighter, lighter, and freer, creating an illusion of depth. One can install full-length mirrors covering the entirety of a wall or install floor mirrors as accent pieces for the apartment. Floor mirrors can be a budget-friendly option for the interior design of small apartments. Not only do mirrors make the space appear bigger, but also add whimsy to the overall appearance of the apartment.
Tall shelves utilize the vertical space in an apartment leaving most of the floor space vacant. They can be an organizational boon and help to keep the small apartment clutter-free. They can also be creative sites of self-expression where one can display possessions closest to them, building the character of the place and personalizing it. As one infuses their personality in the space they inhabit, the warmer the space becomes. Wall shelves are excellent storage options for when one owns a lot of possessions but does not want to hide them away in storage boxes.
Appliances like home theater, television, gaming setup, or study desks can be mounted on the wall in order to save floor space in a small apartment. Many professionals need to set up a distinctive workspace in their homes but cannot do so due to a lack of space. A mounted desk simplifies the process of creating a home office in a small apartment since it does not consume any floor space. It can also be wound up to the wall and shut at the end of the day making it appear as if the desk was not there at all. Mounting the television saves space in a similar manner and also makes the interior look more modern, contemporary, experimental, and stylish.
Just because a space is small does not mean that it cannot be aptly designed or decorated. Minimalism is the way to go when dealing with designing small apartments. Going over the board can clutter an already constricted space. Therefore, simplicity is the golden mantra while designing small apartments. However, one should not evade displaying their personality via home decor. A home is a reflection of the people who inhabit it. Personalization adds beauty to the overall appearance of the place and makes it unique. A balance of principles of interior design and personal inputs can elevate the look of a small apartment making it appear spacious and warm. With ample lighting, a soothing color palette, and appropriate furniture, one can design the home of their dreams even in a small space.
