Eligibilty

For Undergraduate Programmes

Candidates who have passed their Class XII Examination (or equivalent) in any stream (Science, Commerce, Humanities or Arts) are considered eligible to apply. Those who are appearing for their Class XII Examination in the current academic year or are awaiting their results may also apply.

IIAD accepts students from any of the below listed Boards of Education:

  • Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
  • Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE)
  • Indian State Boards
  • National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Cambridge International Examinations (CIE)
  • Or any other approved National or International Board of Education

For Postgraduate Programmes

Candidates who have passed their Undergraduate Examination (or equivalent) in any discipline from a recognised Institute or University may apply. Those who are appearing for it in the current academic year or are awaiting their results may also apply.

Application Process

Each year IIAD accepts a select number of students to its undergraduate programmes purely based on merit. It is therefore strongly recommended to begin the Application Process at an early stage to get the programme of your choice.

Candidates who wish to apply to the undergraduate programmes can submit their Application Form along with necessary documents by registering themselves at IIAD’s Online Application Portal.

Students who successfully complete the iDAT Entrance Test will be eligible to apply for the Scholarship. The Scholarship form will be made available along with the offer letter.

The IIAD Entrance Examination comprises the following parts/rounds based on the programme of interest.

For Fashion Design, Communication Design and Interior Architecture & Design Applicants:

iDAT – IIAD Design Aptitude Test

  • Part A – Written Test
  • Part B – Studio Simulation

 

Part A – Written Test

IIAD’s Design Aptitude Test (written) tests the applicants’ logical reasoning, creative thinking and visual aptitude. This is a written exam of 2 hours 30 mins. Students who appear in the written iDAT must also appear for a Studio Simulation at the IIAD campus in New Delhi.

Part B – Studio Simulation

‘Studio simulation test’ is a two-hour activity in which a group of 10-15 students are given a brief along with the material. Candidates are required to create a 3D model using that material under the supervision of the faculty. They will be judged on the basis of teamwork, creative thinking, innovation & problem-solving skills.

 

For Fashion Business Management Applicants:

iMAT – IIAD Management Aptitude Test

  • Part A – Written Test
  • Part B – Personal Interview

IIAD’s Management Aptitude Test (iMAT) tests the applicants’ language, logical reasoning and analytical thinking. This is a written exam of 2 hours. Students who appear in written iMAT must also appear for a Personal Interview at the IIAD campus in New Delhi.

About IIAD

How is IIAD different from other designing colleges?

Indian Institute of Art and Design in collaboration with Kingston University, London offers new-age design education to its students. The studio-based learning and hands-on Industry experience offers students the knowledge and exposure required to understand how the creative  industries function.

What is the nature of relationship between IIAD and Kingston University, London?

IIAD offers all its BA (Hons) degree programmes and MA* degree programmes in collaboration with Kingston School of Art, Kingston University, London. The courses at IIAD meet the quality standards and requirements of Kingston University. Both institutions share their resources and best practices for the development of the curriculum and the delivery of the courses.

The academic collaboration with Kingston School of Art is the founding stone of the design pedagogy being taught at IIAD. It is known to be a pioneer in art and design education since the 1870s and has helped evolve the Institute’s comprehensive curriculum since inception.

Does IIAD provide student exchange programmes?

IIAD students can enroll for Summer Courses / Short Courses at Kingston University, London for the duration of 2 weeks to 4 weeks and upon selection they can learn from the experts at Kingston University.

Are the degrees offered by IIAD recognised in India?

Yes, the degree offered at IIAD are recognised nationally and internationally. Apart from the degree offered by Kingston University, London, IIAD also offers a B.Voc degree in collaboration with Lingaya’s University which is UGC recognised.

The degrees provided by IIAD can help the students in:

How do I apply?

IIAD accepts a  certain number of students in to their Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree programmes based on their iDAT/iMAT and Studio Simulation Test/Personal Interview scores. Candidates can follow either the online application process or the offline application process.

Online Application Process: Candidates who wish to apply to the Undergraduate / Postgraduate programmes can submit their Application Form along with all the required documents by registering themselves at IIAD’s Online Application Portal.

Offline Application Process: Interested candidates can visit the IIAD campus, collect the Application Form and submit it along with all the required documents to IIAD’s Admissions Office.

Is portfolio mandatory for the designing course?

A portfolio is not a mandatory requirement for the entrance examination process of IIAD. However, if you have one and would like to share it, the faculty will be happy to review it.

When should I start the application process?

The application process for the new admissions cycle begins in the month of September every year.

Can students transfer to IIAD ?

Yes, IIAD accepts applications for transfer to IIAD for the design discipline from students who have successfully completed previous year(s) of their design degree/diploma programme from a nationally or internationally recognized Design Institute. This transfer is also referred to as Lateral Entry.  For further details, Download the Lateral Entry Form.

Based on an interview and discussion on the work completed by the student at the previous Design Institute, the candidate may be offered admission into the desired degree programme at IIAD.

Do I also need to submit a printed copy of the application form, once I have submitted it online?

No, please submit an application only ONCE.

How do I send in my original academic transcripts/mark sheets, other documents and photographs required as part of the application process?

IIAD does not require original documents at the time of application. While applying online, you may upload documents where relevant. In case of offline application, attach a photocopy of relevant documents.

If selected, you will have to show the original documents at the time of admission.

Can we view our completed Online Form?

Once you have clicked on the “final submit” button you will be able to view your completed form. On the top right hand corner of your completed form there is a download button available for you to download your completed form.

Do you acknowledge the receipt of an Online application by mail?

Yes! You will receive a mail once your application has been submitted followed by a call from the admissions counsellor.

Where will the iDAT /iMAT and Studio Simulation / Personal Interviews take place?

The IIAD Entrance Exam is conducted at various Test centres across the country and comprises of the following rounds based on the programme of interest.

For Fashion Design, Communication Design and Interior Architecture & Design:

Part A – IIAD Design Aptitude Test (iDAT)

iDAT is a 200 marks, 2.5 hours test, mandatory for all applicants. The test consists of two sections: Section A on Logical Reasoning and Section B on Creative Thinking and Visual Ability. This test evaluates the candidates aptitude for drawing, design ability, power of observation/representation, creativity, imagination, lateral thinking and writing skills. It further gauges the candidate’s environmental awareness through visual and textual questioning.

Part B – Studio Simulation

Studio Simulation is a personal interaction session conducted in a studio simulated environment to understand a candidate’s interest in the discipline, evaluate their design aptitude, test their ability to innovate and assess their capacity to comprehend information and solve problems.

For Fashion Business Management:

Part A – IIAD Management Aptitude Test (iMAT)

iMAT is a 2 hours test mandatory for all Fashion Business Management candidates. The test consists of logical reasoning, creative thinking and language.

Part B – Personal Interview

Students who appear  for iMAT  have  to appear for Personal Interview at the IIAD campus in New Delhi.

How many students will be admitted in one academic year?

At the Undergraduate level, we are aiming for a total of 210 students, with 60 students in each of the three design courses and 30 students in the Fashion Business Management course.

At the Postgraduate level, we are aiming for a total of 60 students, with 30 students in each course.

On successful completion of the 4 year programme you will receive a BA (Hons) degree from Kingston University

What kind of certificate/diploma/degree will I get after completing the Post Graduation course?

On successful completion of the 2 year programme you will receive an MA degree from Kingston University, London.

What is the medium of instruction?

The medium of instruction at the Indian Institute of Art and Design is English.

I have done my graduation in a different stream of study. Would I be eligible to apply for the PG courses?

Yes, IIAD accepts applications from candidates with or without a background in design for the Postgraduate courses.

What skills, background or technical experience do I need?

Candidates must have an interest in and have a flair for Art and Design. Any additional knowledge or experience in drawing/sketching, model making and visual art forms would be an asset towards your admission.

What does the selection process involve?

The Institute looks for talented ambitious and committed students who are prepared for a career in Art and Design. The selection process is based upon a written examination followed by  Studio Simulation / Personal Interview round. For more details, please visit admissions

Are there any prerequisites for applying for the course?

There are no prerequisites for joining any of our design courses. We welcome students from all streams of study who meet the eligibility criteria.

Does IIAD offer Scholarships?

Who is eligible to apply for scholarship?

Eligibility for Undergraduate course: The candidate must have cleared Class XII with a minimum of 70% marks

Eligibility for Postgraduate course: The candidate must have graduated from a recognised university with a minimum of 60% marks.

The candidate must also submit the completed Scholarship Form along with the Application Form at the time of applying to IIAD. Post this, the candidate is assessed based on his/her performance in the IIAD Entrance Examination comprising iDAT / iMAT and Studio Simulation / Personal Interview

Accommodation

Does IIAD provide Hostel accommodation?

IIAD offers residential accommodation facility for outstation students on ‘FIRST-COME-FIRST-SERVE-BASIS’. Kindly note that the accommodation has limited seats and therefore the earlier you book the accommodation, the better you are placed. The residential accommodations are a short commute from IIAD’s campus with metro stations nearby. Do you have separate Hostels for boys and girls?

Yes, IIAD offers separate residential accommodation facilities for boys and girls.

The hostel facility for girls is at CoHo which is approx 30 mins away from the IIAD campus and the hostel facility for boys is ISRA which is approx 20 mins away from the IIAD campus. The rooms at CoHo and ISRA can be acquired on a ‘first come first serve’ basis.

We also provide assistance in acquiring good, affordable and safe PGs near the college campus with all the required amenities.

What are the college timings of IIAD?

The college timings  are Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. However, the campus is open till 6pm to enable students to complete their project work. The institute is also open to students on Saturdays from 10.00AM to 5.00PM.

How is the canteen at IIAD?

IIAD offers canteen facility within the campus that serves a variety of delicious hygienic food at pocket-friendly prices.

Internships & Placements

Do you provide internships during the course? If yes, how does it work?

Internships are an integral part of the pedagogy and the learning process at IIAD, which is based on an integrated approach to design and its relevance to the industry. To this end, we encourage our students to actively seek out and engage in internships, right from the end of their Year 1 as well as Year 2. After Year 3, a 16-week internship is mandatory as well as an academic requirement. This 3 tiered system of internships, embedded between the four years of study at IIAD ensures that the students have acquired real life work experience and exposure by the time they graduate.

Are placements available after the course?

Placements in design are of a multiple variety, ranging from bespoke, niche design practice to large multinational conglomerates. Based on the aptitude and interest of the students, IIAD offers all possible assistance and facilitation to help students secure the best placement

The course fee does not include materials cost. It has to be purchased by students on timely basis as per the requirement.

Job Prospects

What are the job prospects after graduating?

Design students have multiple prospects once they graduate. They can look for experience and learning in a niche, bespoke design practice, or they can enter the world of corporate design through a myriad of large conglomerates. They can also decide to start their own practice/workshop if they have an entrepreneurial streak.

What type of companies hire our students / come for campus recruitment ?

Design does not always operate as large industrial activity, hence the nature of the ‘companies’ that might hire our students, whether on-campus, or off-campus, can vary from a star designer-led practice, or a niche consulting practice or a large multinational corporation. Government and non-government organizations also seek to hire designers, as do large international institutions like the UN or Ford Foundation etc.

Industry Interactions

Are there any guest lectures by industrialists during the course?

There are multiple guest lectures, master-classes and interactions with the industry and experts on a regular basis at IIAD. These include representatives from the industry and subject matter experts besides visiting national and international practitioners and professors.

Will there be any Industry visits for the students?

Not just Industry visits, IIAD students frequently undertake market and other research visits, as well as offsite academic trips to places and regions which is often a part of the Live projects.
