Communication Design students at the Indian Institute of Art & Design (IIAD) recently embarked on an exhilarating journey of creativity and learning through a series of masterclasses led by renowned industry experts. Under the guidance of Shaaz Ahmed, Associate Professor in Communication Design, these masterclasses delved into the realms of filmmaking, storytelling, Indian New Wave Cinema, production design for cinema, acting for directors, and the art of sound design. Here's a glimpse of the enriching experiences these students had:
The journey began with a masterclass led by Anamika Haksar, a renowned filmmaker and theatre enthusiast. Having trained under legends like Badal Sarcar and B.V. Karanth at NSD and Moscow's State Institute of Theatre Arts, Anamika's expertise in visual storytelling and character development left the students inspired. Her upcoming film screening, 'Ghode Ko Jalebi Khilane Le Ja Riya Hoon,’ was a cinematic treat not to be missed.
In the second masterclass, Varun Grover, the versatile Indian writer, comedian, poet, and filmmaker, shared his creative brilliance. Students had the privilege of learning from an artist celebrated for his wit and narrative creativity. Varun's session promised to enhance storytelling skills significantly, drawing from his diverse background and accomplishments in the entertainment industry.
MK Raina, a renowned actor and filmmaker, conducted an immersive masterclass exploring Indian New Wave Cinema. With a rich tapestry of plays and films to his credit, including 'Uski Roti' by visionary filmmaker Mani Kaul, MK Raina's insights into the world of cinematic brilliance were invaluable. The screening of 'Uski Roti' was a highlight of this enlightening day.
Celebrated filmmaker and production designer Vandana Kataria, known for her meticulous production design in "Byomkesh Bakshi" and directorial debut with "Noblemen," offered students a glimpse into her creative journey. Vandana's ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary was a testament to her artistry. Students had the opportunity to immerse themselves under her expert guidance.
The versatile Sudhanva Deshpande, a renowned theatre director and actor, led an immersive 3-day workshop titled "Acting for Directors." Sudhanva's theatrical prowess and perceptive viewpoint on societal concerns made this workshop an unmissable opportunity for students to delve into the world of direction and storytelling.
The journey culminated with a 2-day workshop on sound design led by Anirban Ghosh, a celebrated sound designer and composer. With a diverse portfolio of performances and recordings alongside illustrious musicians, Anirban enriched students' understanding of the nuanced art of sound design. His insights were invaluable in amplifying their creative horizons.
The masterclasses at IIAD not only provided students with exposure to industry experts but also offered a platform for learning, inspiration, and artistic growth. These interactions were a testament to IIAD's commitment to nurturing creative talent and fostering a dynamic learning environment for its students.
