Collaborative Projects

The Bamboo Project

ModSkool, the brainchild of Community Architects, Ms. Swati Janu, and Ms. Nidhi Sohane, is a modular school concept that builds schools for children residing in Yamuna Khadar, New Delhi. As part of this initiative, ModSKOOL collaborated with our students pursuing Interior Architecture and Design programme at IIAD to develop a prototype of a classroom ceiling.   The brief was that these low-cost structures must be easy to build and dismantle, keeping in mind the impromptu demolishing drives by the authorities. This volunteer project involved an on-campus studio session with Ms. Swati Janu followed by an onsite session in Mayur Vihar where the students wove a bamboo mat and installed it onto the classroom structure. "Such live projects not only help students learn the practical aspects of Interior Architecture and Design but also encourage active engagement with the local communities and realise their social responsibilities as designers", opines Dr. Chadha, Founder Director of IIAD.
