It is with great pride that we announce the Prof. Edward Newton Scholarship Programme for Meritorious students of the Indian Institute of Art and Design.
The scholarship has been constituted as an earnest tribute to Prof. Newton and the groundbreaking work that he did as a renowned design practitioner, researcher, educator and as advisor to the Indian Institute of Art and Design.
Prof. Newton was one of the esteemed founding members of the Advisory Board of the Indian Institute of Art and Design and helped lay the very foundations of this institute, its ethos, curriculum and pedagogy. During his association with us, he facilitated the strategic collaboration between IIAD and Kingston University, London and offered mission-critical counsel on the validation of all programmes of study. IIAD is the realization of his vision to further the cause of holistic design education in India – an education with a multi-disciplinary outlook, enabling students to develop a global perspective while providing them a thorough grounding in indigenous techniques, crafts and contexts.
Besides being a mentor and guide to the faculty and students of IIAD, Prof. Newton had an illustrious career in the design industry. During his practice of over 40 years, Prof. Newton did prolific work in the field of fashion and textile design, served as a consultant to the Industry and academia alike, published work of strategic significance and contributed to the establishment of higher-educational Design institutes, including the Mauritius Institute of Fashion Design and the Indian Institute of Art and Design. A fellow and member of several prestigious organisations in art and design, Prof. Newton worked relentlessly to champion the cause of design education across the globe and to bring about innovation in the filed. Right until his sad demise on September 7, 2016, he remained a visiting lecturer and professor at many of the world’s leading fashion and textile institutes including the Royal College of Art, London and the University of Leeds, U.K. He was also Founding Member and Emeritus Chair of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes (IFFTI).
A man of great accomplishments, stature and keen intellect, Prof. Newton’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of aspiring designers. IIAD stands tall today as a result of his exceptional guidance and strives to continually uphold his vision and aspirations, not just for the institute but for design education as well.
The Edward Newton Scholarship Programme for Meritorious students of the Indian Institute of Art and Design is a humble endeavour to carry forward his great legacy and financially support students who strive to make a difference in the field of design, through their genuine passion and exemplary engagement with their design discipline.
