Saumya Pande graduated in fashion design from National Institute of Fashion Technology (1995, NIFT, New Delhi) and completed her masters’ in fashion and textiles with a distinction from Nottingham Trent University (2015, in affiliation with Pearl Academy). As a design educator, she holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE, 2014)
She initiated her design studio in 2003, after eight years of active design consultancy and teaching experience at NIFT. She ran her own consultancy/ design studio and retailed under the label ‘Woven Dreams’ in India for the next 10 years. Her work utilized the finest of weaves and traditional textile skills from remote corners of India. She has held several ramp shows and exhibitions of garments and textiles developed by her. Her latest work, as a textile artist, has been exhibited in India and Italy as part of a prestigious conference on fashion.
She also taught as visiting faculty at NIFT, Pearl Academy, National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi at the postgraduate level. As an assistant professor with NIFT, she was instrumental in formulating and implementing new design courses and documenting various crafts from all over the country. Her intensive experience of product development in association with organizations like International Labour Organization (ILO), CARE (India), RUDA, and Ministry of Textiles (Government of India) gave her opportunities to work with several craft clusters at the grassroots.
Her present profile is of leading the undergraduate programme in fashion design at the Indian Institute of Art and Design.
She loves to illustrate for children, has been an erstwhile Odissi dancer and aspires to be a full time textile artist. Someday, she wants to work with rural women on empowerment through skill development.
