Vice Chancellor - Kingston University
KINGSTON UNIVERSITY
Professor Spier was instrumental in establishing the collaboration between IIAD and Kingston University (KU) in 2014. As Head of the Design School at the time, Professor Spier was excited with the thought that the collaboration between KU and IIAD would bring international quality design education to India. Under his guidance, IIAD has taken the pedagogy and curriculum of British design schools and incorporated an Indian context to ensure a distinctly innovative design education. This gives the students the best of both worlds. When he recently visited IIAD in 2019 as the Chief Guest for the Convocation Ceremony of the first graduating batch he was pleased to see the progress IIAD has made in the short span of five years. The students at IIAD had benefited positively from the collaboration between KU and IIAD and that IIAD was on its way to become a leading design school in India Brief Bio An accomplished academic and an influential figure in higher education circles, at the international level as well as UK, Professor Spier is currently the Vice Chancellor of Kingston University. He joined Kingston University in 2012 as Dean of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture, now known as the Kingston School of Art. Prior to becoming Vice Chancellor, he held the post of Pro Vice-Chancellor for Culture and Civic Engagement. He holds a degree in philosophy from Haverford College, Philadelphia, and completed postgraduate studies at the Southern California Institute of Architecture. His early career saw him based in a number of European cities. He was also the founding principal of the HafenCity University Hamburg in Germany. Prof Spier has links with a wide range of cultural institutions. He was a founding director of the board of Architecture and Design Scotland, is an honorary fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and of German body Bund Deutscher Architekten and was a long-serving board member of Scottish Ballet.
