In the first of our series of interactions with you, the aspiring Communication Design student, I think it is important you know something about me, the field and the future of Communication Design. For that, you need to know what Communication Designers do.
It is interesting to note that you will rarely find a job opening for a ‘Communication Designer’. You will see the requirement of a web designer, a graphic designer, a visualizer, art director, app design specialist, illustrator, photographer, content writer, film maker, animator, set designer, game designer or any others that are emerging every day as job opportunities. All these careers and skills come under the purview of Communication Design.
So what is it that you will learn in the four years at IIAD, before qualifying as a Graduate in qualifying as a Graduate in Communication Design? All of the above or a few? What about the new types of media and technology that will be invented even as you are a student with us, considering there are always innovative ideas that we wake up to every morning!
You will learn all of the above. Really! Communication design is much more than a simple graphic design course and includes a range of media like animation, typography, print media design, UX/UI design, photography, filmmaking, web design and a great deal more. We follow a project-based learning system, which will, in the next 4 years, equip you adequately with the skills and the confidence to chart your own route or join the creative workforce in any of the mentioned fields.
Our holistic system encourages self-driven and multi-disciplinary outcomes, with mentoring, not tutoring at every stage of your way. Imagine the freedom to explore and experiment, present and express as a designer the moment you get into the Communication Design studio…exciting, isn’t it? Here you will find your peers, juniors and seniors working on projects and that’s where the actual learning happens. Rarely, if ever, do we see such a practice in Design Schools in India.
The faculty members are qualified, practicing professionals who will oversee your progress and help you achieve your best potential. We are also bound by our commitment to deliver Kingston standards because that is the degree you will be awarded.
As for me, the field has been a blessing. Initially as an advertising professional, then as a freelance designer and now as a faculty, it has been very eventful! Not one boring, predictable day! The projects could use up all my energy and mind-space, but once the output is out for the world to see, the joy makes it all worthwhile! This has to be experienced to be understood!
Challenging, yes, of course!! Why not!!!?? Unless you want a 9-5 desk job, that is!
