Soumitra Dasgupta

Soumitra Dasgupta is an avid Illustrator, Graphics Artist, and a master of Fine Arts. Currently working as a Creative Consultant and Independent Artist, he is a globally recognised painter, multi-media artist with over 40 years of experience across multiple countries and industries. He has completed his Graduation from Govt. College of Arts and Craft (Calcutta) in Applied Art and Photography. He commenced his career as a Visualizer in React Advertising, Delhi. He then went on to working with various advertising agencies to upscale his skills. He has worked for agencies like Advertising Consultation India Limited (ACIL) as an Art Director, RK Swamy/BBDO as a Creative Supervisor and National Advertising as an Art Director. He then began working as a Creative Consultant for agencies like Avant Garde Advertising, Singapore, and TBWA/Anthem.

Soumitra has also provided Art Direction and Scripting for various documentaries, feature and ad films. He has worked as a Production Designer for ‘Dear Friend Hitler’ named ‘Gandhi to Hitler’ in India starring Raghubir Yadav and Neha Dhupia. He has conceptualised and designed the timeless set for the film. He has also worked on the personification of ‘Shakti’ through a series of paintings that were exhibited in Arpana Art Gallery in March 2011. He has also contributed as an Art Director for Documentaries like ‘Mid Air Collison - Charkhi Dadri’ and ‘Hijack’ aired on National Geographic. He has worked as the Head of Creative Consultant for TV Shows like ‘Kyunki Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’, a television show based on social issue and ‘Gali Gali Sim Sim’, the Indian version of Sesame Street. As a painter and artist, he has also supervised multiple art exhibitions across India and Canada.

Throughout his career, he took part in innumerable workshops. Some of them are the ones with British School, Festival of art at Nehru Park, and Brampton Art Centre in Canada. He also holds extensive experience in Creative Designing, Graphic Novel Illustration and Teaching. He has worked on the Graphics and Illustration of the book titled ‘SriRatna Kim Suro’ written by N Parthasarathi and published by National Book Trust. Currently, he is working on two more books titled ‘City of crows’ and ‘Babu Bibi.’ As a Teacher, he worked as a Guest Faculty for School of Foundation: Design Concept at Pearl Academy. He has also initiated numerous solo exhibitions of his works. He enjoys Virtual Travelling and Watching Food Shows while designing for films is his passion.

At IIAD, he will be engaging with and mentoring the students pursuing their Fashion Design Programme. The students would get to learn the intricacies of creative and critical thinking from Soumitra with a thorough insight on the functionality of the design industry.
