Rakesh Sonavane has extensive experience in the high fashion and luxury garment segments in various capacities over the last 18 years. After graduating from NIFT, Delhi in Fashion Design, he took on the role of an Assistant Professor at the Institute where he mentored students in design development, pattern making, garment engineering, fit analysis, advance draping and portfolio development as well. Further he went on to offer his services as a technical design consultant and worked with organisations like Sandy Bear designs, 11.11/eleven eleven and Kabir Leathers. While consulting for these organisations, Rakesh handled an array of brands such as Sandy Starkman, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Avenue and Cold Water Creek, to name a few.

Owing to his fashion expertise, Rakesh has also facilitated numerous workshops at Kala Raksha in Gujarat, Northern India Institute of Technology in Mohali, National Institute of Fashion Technology in Ahmedabad and also for Indian fashion retail brands like Raymonds. These interactive workshops spanned across subject matter of design development, motif development, innovative block printing techniques, pattern drafting, construction techniques, trim applications and the like.

Over the years Rakesh has undertaken various challenging assignments and showcased his skill sets in as many ways possible. He has designed uniforms for the Uttarakhand Tourism Police, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Petronet LNG Limited. He has also been associated with SEWA, Ahmedabad wherein he designed and developed a women’s pret to be showcased in Spain and a couture collection for a fashion show in New York.

His work has been well appreciated in the fashion circuit and he has won awards for his exemplary work as a fashion designer. He was selected by the Ministry of Textiles to represent India and design the Indian Pavilion at the Heimtextil Fair at Frankfurt, Germany.

Being driven by his passion for teaching, Rakesh steered his professional career back to the education field and is now mentoring the Level 4 Fashion Design students at IIAD. Amidst his academic and professional pursuits, Rakesh also takes keen interest in Photography, Fine Arts and Graphic Design.
